In Jammu and Kashmir, at least 11 individuals have lost their lives, and many others are reported missing following a series of landslides and cloudbursts triggered by relentless rainfall on Saturday. Officials have confirmed the devastating impact of these natural disasters across the Union Territory.

In Reasi district, a family of seven was tragically killed when their home collapsed due to a landslide early Friday morning. Rescuers recovered the bodies of all seven family members, including five children aged between 4 and 12, from the rubble of their makeshift house on Saturday.

In Ramban, four people died, and four others are unaccounted for after a cloudburst in the higher elevations of Rajgarh led to flash floods. The swift-moving waters destroyed homes, damaged infrastructure, and completely washed away some structures, according to local officials. Rescue and relief operations are currently underway.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh addressed the situation in Ramban, stating that all possible assistance is being provided to those affected. “I just spoke to DC Ramban Mohammad Alyas Khan. The cloudburst in the Rajgarh area has resulted in the unfortunate loss of four lives, with one person still missing. Search operations are ongoing, and thankfully, there are no reported injuries,” Singh shared in a post on social media.

Ramban is situated approximately 136 kilometers from Srinagar, and the region has been experiencing heavy rainfall for over a week. This has caused rivers to overflow, leading to widespread flooding and landslides, with boulders, trees, and rocks tumbling down the slopes.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a crucial 270-kilometer route connecting the Valley to the rest of the country, has been closed for five consecutive days due to landslides between Jakheni and Chenani in Udhampur district. More than 2,000 vehicles remain stranded as a result. Additionally, nine inter-district roads in the Jammu region are also blocked due to landslides and erosion, leaving numerous villages in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, and Udhampur isolated after days of continuous rainfall.

Earlier this week, a landslide near the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra resulted in the deaths of 31 people, with several others missing. The path to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine on Trikuta hill has been severely affected, leading to the suspension of the pilgrimage.

The weather office has issued a yellow alert for Friday in Poonch, Reasi, Rajouri, Kishtwar, and Udhampur, warning of thunderstorms and lightning. For Saturday and Sunday, the alert has been escalated to orange in Poonch, Kishtwar, Jammu, Ramban, and Udhampur, indicating the potential for heavier rainfall.
