In a surprising turn of events, an unemployed man from Nagpur was apprehended for chain-snatching as a means to fulfill his court-mandated alimony payments to his ex-wife. The suspect, Kanhaiya Narayan Baurashi, a resident of Ganpatinagar in Mankapur, was taken into custody during an investigation into a recent robbery incident.

The case came to light following a complaint from 74-year-old Jayshree Jaykumar Gade, who reported that a motorcycle-riding assailant had stolen her gold chain in Manishnagar on February 22. The police registered a case based on her report and initiated an investigation.

Through technical surveillance and local intelligence, authorities were led to Kanhaiya, who confessed to the crime during questioning. Further interrogation revealed that he had been involved in at least four similar robberies. Kanhaiya explained that he resorted to crime out of desperation to pay the Rs 6,000 monthly alimony mandated by the court, as he had been unemployed for the past two years. Notably, he had remarried during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The investigation also uncovered that Kanhaiya had sold some of the stolen jewelry to a local jeweler, Amardeep Krishnarao Nakhate, the owner of Shri Sai Jewellers. Nakhate was subsequently arrested for dealing in stolen property.

During searches at locations identified by Kanhaiya, police recovered a motorcycle, a mobile phone, and 10 grams of gold grains valued at approximately Rs 1.85 lakh. Both Kanhaiya and Nakhate are currently in custody and have been transferred to the Beltarodi police for further investigation.

This incident highlights the lengths to which individuals may go when faced with financial pressures, raising questions about the broader implications of unemployment and legal obligations in society.
