A prominent player from the Yankees challenges the team’s traditional facial hair policy, sparking a flurry of reactions across social media.

When Devin Williams was traded to the New York Yankees, he had to reach for the razor. The Yankees have maintained a longstanding policy since the era of George Steinbrenner that prohibits players from sporting facial hair below the lower lip. As a result, the standout closer had to part with his impressive beard, resulting in a completely new appearance.

However, just a week into his time in Tampa, Williams seemed to have forgotten to shave on Tuesday morning, sporting some light stubble. This oversight did not go unnoticed, as many Yankee fans took to social media to express their discontent. Fellow newcomer Paul Goldschmidt also had to shave, leading one observer to comment that he looked like he had “added 30 years to his life.”

When asked about his clean-shaven look, Williams simply stated, “It is what it is.” This marked the first time he had shaved his beard in six years, having arrived at camp without having done so. While many Yankee legends have sported mustaches, such as Don Mattingly and Goose Gossage, beards have sparked discussions and sometimes controversy. CC Sabathia expressed his frustration a few years back when former top prospect Clint Frazier flaunted long hair, which also required upkeep. In response, Sabathia decided to grow a slight beard.

Since retiring, the Hall of Famer has maintained his beard, and even Derek Jeter has embraced some facial hair. Many Yankees grow facial hair during the offseason or when they join other teams.

This policy has led to notable transformations, such as Johnny Damon’s makeover in 2005, and general manager Brian Cashman once ruled out closer Brian Wilson over a decade ago due to Wilson’s refusal to shave his signature beard.
