A tragic incident occurred in Odisha’s Sundergarh district on Saturday morning, where a railway maintenance worker lost his life and another was critically injured in a suspected landmine explosion attributed to Maoist insurgents. The blast took place around 10 am near Rengada while the railway staff were engaged in track maintenance activities.

The deceased has been identified as 37-year-old Etawa Oram, a resident of Bisara village. His colleague, Budharam Munda, suffered severe injuries and was promptly transported to Rourkela General Hospital for urgent medical care. The explosion has instilled fear among local residents and has significantly disrupted train services in the area.

Authorities from the K Balanga police station responded swiftly to the scene and initiated an investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that the blast may have been executed by Maoist groups, known for targeting infrastructure to exert control and instill fear in the region.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his condolences over the incident and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of the deceased. “This is a tragic loss. We stand with the family of Etawa Oram during this difficult time,” the Chief Minister stated.

As a result of the explosion, train operations on the affected route have been temporarily suspended, causing significant inconvenience for commuters.
