According to officials, Nayak discovered a dead monitor lizard by the roadside near Banta while returning from his in-laws’ home in Bhadrak. He took the lizard home, prepared it for cooking, and filmed the entire process, which he later uploaded to his social media channel.

The video quickly gained traction online, inciting public outrage. In response, the Forest Department initiated an investigation and registered a case against Nayak. During questioning, he confessed to his actions, leading to his arrest under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

A forest official stated that the incident came to light through social media. “Roop Nayak admitted that he was traveling with his wife when he found the dead monitor lizard about two kilometers from Banta Chowk. He filmed himself cooking the lizard’s meat to promote his YouTube channel and generate income, which constitutes a serious offense. A case has been filed, and he has been presented to the court,” the official explained.

Forest officials emphasized that hunting, killing, or consuming any protected or endangered species is a grave violation of the law, carrying severe penalties, including imprisonment and fines.
