All schools and colleges in Dharwad, Karnataka, are closed for the day due to a red alert for rain.

**Heavy Rainfall Triggers School Closures in Karnataka’s Dharwad District**

In response to a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Dharwad district in Karnataka, all educational institutions will remain closed today. The alert has been prompted by forecasts predicting extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds in the region.

Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu confirmed that all Anganwadis, primary and high schools, as well as pre-university and degree colleges, will observe a holiday on June 12. However, the third annual exams for second-year PUC students will proceed as planned.

The red alert indicates the potential for rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within a 24-hour period, following significant downpours that have already affected the district, particularly in areas like Hanashi village, leading to considerable waterlogging. Officials are concerned about possible flooding in low-lying areas, especially near the Tupparihalla and Bennihalla catchment zones.

Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors and limit travel. An emergency helpline has been established (0836-2445505, 1077), and officials have been instructed to stay at their posts.

Initially, an orange alert was issued for the district on June 11, which was later escalated to a red alert for June 12 due to deteriorating weather conditions. Forecasts suggest sustained winds of 50–60 km/h and the likelihood of extremely heavy rain in isolated areas.

The southwest monsoon has intensified across Karnataka, with widespread rainfall expected to continue until at least June 17. Dharwad, along with other regions in North Interior Karnataka, is among the most severely impacted areas.
