As he pursues a place in NHL history, Alex Ovechkin contributes to pediatric cancer research.

**Alex Ovechkin’s Commitment to Pediatric Cancer Research Amidst Pursuit of NHL Goal-Scoring Record**

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin is making headlines not only for his pursuit of hockey history but also for his commitment to a cause that transcends the sport. On Wednesday, the Capitals announced a partnership involving Ovechkin, Hockey Fights Cancer, and the V Foundation aimed at raising funds for pediatric cancer research, coinciding with his chase for the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring record.

In a statement released by the team, Ovechkin expressed his dedication to using his influence for positive change. “Throughout my NHL career, I have met many brave kids battling cancer, and I feel it’s important to do what I can to help save more lives from this horrible disease,” he stated. “I want to thank the V Foundation for all their hard work, and I look forward to using my platform and doing anything I can to help further the V Foundation and Hockey Fights Cancer’s mission.”

Currently, Ovechkin is just 11 goals shy of surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s legendary total of 894 goals. Starting with Wednesday’s game against the New York Rangers, Ovechkin has pledged to donate an amount equivalent to his career goal total each time he scores for the rest of his career. Additionally, his contributions will be matched by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of the Capitals.

“Alex Ovechkin’s ascent to greatness on the ice has been a thrill for all hockey fans, and his commitment to funding innovative pediatric cancer research will make a lifesaving impact for years to come,” remarked Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation for Cancer Research. “We are thrilled to have Alex on our team and look forward to celebrating his accomplishments and advancements in cancer research together.”

At 39 years old, Ovechkin has already netted 31 goals this season, despite having missed 16 games due to a leg injury sustained in November.
