Better late than never: Air India Express has received its 50th MAX aircraft.

**Air India Express Expands Fleet with 50th MAX 8 Delivery**

In September 2023, Air India Express marked a significant milestone by receiving its first MAX 8 aircraft from Boeing, transitioning from being an all-Boeing 737 NG operator. This delivery came just months after the airline announced its acquisition in February 2023 and formalized the deal in July during the Paris Air Show. The aircraft were originally manufactured for other airlines, primarily in China, but were not accepted by their original owners due to the global grounding of the MAX series following two tragic crashes. The airline has now welcomed its 50th MAX 8, registered as VT-BWV. During the unveiling of the new Air India Express livery, management expressed plans to add 50 new aircraft within 15 months. However, the delivery of the 50th aircraft took a total of 21 months to complete.

Air India Express has experienced remarkable growth since the Tata Group’s acquisition of Air India and its low-cost subsidiary in January 2022. At that time, Air India Express operated a fleet of 26 B737-800NGs, primarily serving Gulf routes. The group has since focused on merging its four airlines into two—one full-service and one low-cost—resulting in Air India Express nearly quadrupling its fleet to over 100 aircraft. This expansion included the integration of planes from AirAsia India, effectively doubling the fleet size, as well as the addition of A320neo and A321neo aircraft from the parent company, Air India, which still bear the older livery. All 50 newly delivered aircraft are the MAX 8 model.

Looking ahead, Air India Express plans to implement a two-pronged strategy. The first step involves standardizing its dual-class fleet, which currently features multiple layouts, into a single-class configuration. The second step will focus on phasing out older Airbus and Boeing aircraft to establish a more fuel-efficient and modern fleet, enhancing its competitiveness against other low-cost carriers, particularly IndiGo.

However, the airline has faced challenges due to delays within the Tata Group. A machinist strike at Boeing last year lasted nearly two months, impacting aircraft deliveries and causing a ripple effect that extended the delivery schedules for all carriers, including Air India Express. Despite these setbacks, the airline has continued to receive planes in the configurations intended for their original operators, with the livery being painted in India.

Air India has also encountered delays in its refurbishment timelines. Initially, the airline aimed to refurbish all legacy aircraft by 2025, but the first widebody aircraft is only now set to undergo refurbishment. In the interim, Air India has arranged for minor updates to its Boeing 777s, such as new carpets, before a more comprehensive reconfiguration begins next year.

As Air India Express continues to grow and modernize its fleet, it remains focused on enhancing operational efficiency and maintaining competitiveness in the evolving aviation market.
