In New Delhi, Bisleri International has revealed alarming statistics regarding plastic consumption in India, stating that the country generates 13 million tonnes of plastic annually, with only 60% being recycled. The remaining 40% primarily consists of non-recyclable materials such as wrappers, plastic bags, milk pouches, and multilayer chip packets. To mitigate the environmental impact of plastic waste and promote sustainability, Bisleri has introduced the “Bottles for Change” initiative, which includes a mobile app designed to connect citizens, plastic collection agents, and recyclers to enhance plastic recycling efforts across the nation.

At the Mint Sustainability Summit 2025, K. Ganesh, Bisleri’s Director of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs, announced that the initiative has successfully collected and recycled over 19,300 tonnes of plastic. Ganesh emphasized the importance of proper disposal and recycling of plastic, noting that many individuals tend to litter after use, leading to increased landfill and ocean pollution.

“Our plastic waste management program educates and empowers citizens to practice source segregation and responsible disposal of post-consumer plastic,” Ganesh stated. “This ensures that all used plastic is sent for recycling, promoting a circular economy and preventing plastics from ending up in landfills and oceans.”

The “Bottles for Change” app facilitates the collection of used plastics from registered stakeholders, directing them to recycling facilities where they can be transformed into new products. For instance, PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles can be recycled into fiber yarn for fabric production, while multilayer plastics are repurposed into durable sheets.

Ganesh highlighted that all PET bottles used by Bisleri and other beverage companies are recyclable and can be converted into rPET (recycled PET), which is suitable for food-grade packaging, thereby reducing the strain on natural resources. The initiative aligns with government regulations for extended producer responsibility (EPR), which mandate producers to manage post-consumer waste effectively.

In addition to recycling efforts, Bisleri has also collected bottle caps to create benches, with each bench made from 60 kilograms of caps, showcasing the potential for creative reuse of plastic waste.

As Bisleri continues to lead the charge in plastic waste management, the “Bottles for Change” initiative serves as a vital step towards fostering a sustainable future and promoting responsible plastic consumption in India.
