BJP Member of Parliament drew attention to Mamata Banerjee’s comments regarding employment for teachers in a statement directed at the Chief Justice.

**BJP MP Urges CJI to Address Mamata Banerjee’s Comments on Supreme Court Ruling**

BJP MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato has called on Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna to take action regarding statements made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the Supreme Court’s decision to cancel 25,752 teacher appointments in the state. The Supreme Court upheld this cancellation on April 3, which involved appointments made through the 2016 West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment process.

In a letter addressed to CJI Khanna, Mahato emphasized that the matter transcends political discourse, labeling it “a threat to the very foundation of the Constitution.” He criticized Banerjee for publicly questioning the judiciary during a press conference at the state secretariat, where she was accompanied by senior IAS officers. Mahato expressed concern that such actions undermine public confidence in constitutional governance.

The BJP MP described the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s ruling as “deeply disturbing,” particularly highlighting Banerjee’s reaction, which he deemed alarming given her administration’s involvement in the recruitment scandal. He warned that if the Chief Minister and her government continue to publicly challenge the highest court, it could set a dangerous precedent for judicial anarchy.

Mahato urged CJI Khanna to take note of Banerjee’s remarks and investigate the potential misuse of state resources to defend those implicated in the recruitment scam. He called for accountability for those who have disrespected the court while under political protection.

In a recent meeting with a group of dismissed teachers at Kolkata’s Netaji Indoor Stadium, Banerjee expressed her support for them, asserting that eligible candidates would not be left without jobs. She stated, “Please don’t consider that we have accepted it. We are not stone-hearted, and I can even be jailed for saying this, but I don’t care.”

The controversy originated from the 2016 SSC recruitment drive, which attracted 23 lakh applications for 24,640 positions. However, more appointment letters were issued than there were available posts. Investigations uncovered tampered OMR sheets and manipulated rankings, leading the Calcutta High Court to annul the appointments in April 2024, a decision that was recently upheld by the Supreme Court. Banerjee indicated that her government would seek clarification from the Supreme Court and may file a review petition to protect the interests of eligible candidates.
