Former PGA golfer Brandel Chamblee, now an analyst, has been a vocal critic of LIV Golf. Chamblee previously described the Saudi-backed league as “funded by a murderous regime” and accused the “greedy” players joining the tour of “helping a dictatorial murderer launder his reputation.” In June 2023, the golf world was taken by surprise when it was announced that the PGA and LIV tours would collaborate for the advancement of the sport.
Discussions are ongoing, but PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan recently mentioned that the tour “asked” former President Donald Trump to get involved for the benefit of the game and the countries involved. LIV Golf has hosted events at several Trump-owned courses. Monahan expressed gratitude for Trump’s leadership, stating it has brought them closer to a final agreement, facilitating the reunification of men’s professional golf.
Chamblee shared that he had the opportunity to play golf with Trump last year, during which they discussed LIV and its potential benefits for the sport. “He was very gracious about our differing views. At one point, he said, ‘Look, I know we have different opinions, but hear me out.’ He claimed that [LIV Golf chairman] Yasir [Al-Rumayyan] loves golf more than either of us,” Chamblee recounted at the Waste Management Open.
Chamblee noted that Trump emphasized the need for Saudi Arabia to diversify its economy, given their vast oil reserves, and expressed excitement about LIV’s future. “As we played, he wanted to discuss LIV and Saudi involvement almost every hole,” Chamblee said.
While Chamblee acknowledged his initial concerns regarding human rights issues, he admitted to gaining a better understanding of the necessity of Saudi Arabia as a partner in the Middle East. He stated that although he didn’t fully agree with Trump, the former president presented compelling arguments that made him reconsider Yasir’s role in the game of golf.
Golf star Rory McIlroy expressed in November that he believed a second term for Trump could facilitate a deal between the PGA and LIV.
