The Kansas City Chiefs fell short of making history as the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls. However, Super Bowl LIX still saw significant achievements. Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith, who led his team with 69 receiving yards, made a remarkable 46-yard touchdown reception, extending the Eagles’ lead to 34-0. Although the Chiefs mounted a late comeback in the second half, it was insufficient, and the Eagles emerged as Super Bowl champions.
In this victory, Smith became only the fifth player in NFL history to win the Heisman Trophy, a national championship, and a Super Bowl, joining the ranks of Tony Dorsett, Marcus Allen, Charles Woodson, and Reggie Bush. Notably, Smith, a member of Alabama’s undefeated 2020 team, is the first Heisman winner to score a touchdown in the Super Bowl and the sixth player to participate in at least two championship games.
As the game drew to a close, Smith shared an emotional moment with former Alabama teammate Jalen Hurts. “Appreciate you man,” Smith said while embracing Hurts. “Hey man, this ain’t our last time at this.” Hurts replied, “It’s been a ride man. You deserve it, bro.”
Smith and Hurts have been teammates in Philadelphia for four seasons and previously played together at Alabama during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
