Following the Indian Air Force chief’s criticism regarding delays, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is expected to deliver two Tejas Mk-1A aircraft in September.

**Tejas Mark-1A Fighter Jets Set for Delivery to Indian Air Force**

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to receive two Tejas Mark-1A fighter jets from Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) by the end of September, as confirmed by Defence Secretary RK Singh. This delivery comes after concerns were raised by IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh regarding delays in defense projects. Singh noted that the timely delivery of these jets is crucial for the IAF, especially in light of a new contract for an additional 97 Tejas jets expected to be signed following this initial delivery.

Singh expressed optimism that the first two jets would be delivered with weapons integration by the end of September, as reported by news agency PTI. The IAF has previously pointed out delays in the delivery of Tejas jets due to missed deadlines from GE Aerospace in supplying engines. The successful delivery of these jets is seen as a pivotal step towards enhancing the IAF’s capabilities.

The Tejas Mark-1A, a single-engine fighter jet, is designed to replace the aging MiG-21 fleet within the IAF. Currently, 38 Tejas jets are operational, with more units in production. In February 2021, the government signed a contract worth Rs 48,000 crore for 83 Tejas jets, and Singh indicated that HAL would maintain an order book for the next four to five years.

In a significant development, the government has also approved the procurement of an additional 97 Tejas fighters, amounting to Rs 67,000 crore. Singh highlighted HAL’s potential to enhance the Tejas platform, suggesting it could serve as a reliable workhorse alongside the Sukhoi jets.

Despite these advancements, Singh acknowledged that challenges remain in fully meeting the IAF’s requirements. He noted, “There will still be a gap, and for that gap, we will have to look at some other options,” indicating the need for further procurement strategies.

The Tejas jets are integral to India’s defense strategy, aimed at bolstering air combat capabilities while reducing reliance on foreign aircraft. The successful integration of indigenous radar and weapon systems is anticipated to significantly enhance the operational effectiveness of these jets.
