Aaron Rodgers’ tenure with the New York Jets may be nearing its conclusion, as reports indicate it is “unlikely” the team will continue with the four-time NFL MVP quarterback. This speculation arose shortly after the Jets appointed Aaron Glenn as their new head coach and named Darren Mougey as the general manager. A potential split between Rodgers and the Jets could signal a desire for a fresh start as the team heads into the offseason.
If Rodgers’ time in New York officially ends with the start of the NFL’s new league year in March, he will have made 18 starts over two seasons. His 2023 season was cut short due to a season-ending injury in the opening week. While a departure from the Jets could raise questions about whether the 41-year-old quarterback will retire, Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Young believes Rodgers still possesses the skills to be an effective player.
Young remarked on a recent show that, despite Rodgers’ declining mobility, he could thrive in a system that embraces innovative strategies and takes advantage of the evolving nature of the game. He noted that if Rodgers finds the right environment, he could still enjoy playing high-level football.
In the 2024 season, Rodgers recorded 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions over 17 games. Although he is closer to the end of his career, he demonstrated flashes of his former brilliance. While it seems unlikely that he will return to his MVP-level performance, several NFL teams are in dire need of capable quarterback play, which could make Rodgers an attractive option if he enters the free agent market. The Jets, having parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh in October, finished the season with a disappointing 5-12 record.
