In a concerted effort to combat cyber crime and the illegal drug trade, the Jharkhand Police have made significant strides, arresting 1,200 individuals involved in cyber offenses and 484 in narcotics-related activities over the past six months. Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Gupta announced these figures during the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the state police headquarters.

Gupta highlighted the police’s commitment to eradicating illegal opium cultivation, revealing that they have successfully destroyed opium crops across 27,000 acres of land. Between January and June of this year, the police seized narcotics valued at approximately Rs 34 crore and apprehended 484 drug peddlers.

In the realm of cyber crime, the DGP reported that over 700 suspects were arrested, with 474 of these arrests facilitated through the innovative Pratibimb app. The police also recovered around Rs 16 crore related to cyber offenses via the cyber helpline number 1930, returning approximately Rs 80 lakh to victims’ accounts as per court orders.

To enhance women’s safety, the Jharkhand Police have established a ‘Mahila Shakti Commando’ force and launched a dedicated women’s helpline. Women help desks have been set up in all districts, ensuring immediate police assistance is available in public spaces. Additionally, women police stations are operational throughout the state.

The DGP emphasized the police’s ongoing battle against Naxalism, reporting that 197 Naxalites were arrested, 10 surrendered, and 17 were killed in encounters within the same six-month period. Tragically, four police personnel lost their lives during operations aimed at eradicating Naxalism, including Sub Inspector Sunil Kumar Mandal of the CRPF and others.

Furthermore, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested 12 members of organized criminal gangs and five activists from the banned terrorist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir (HuT). To foster better communication with the public, the police have organized ‘Public Grievance Resolution Programmes,’ successfully addressing 3,500 out of 4,000 complaints.

In summary, the Jharkhand Police’s proactive measures against cyber crime and drug trafficking, along with their initiatives for women’s safety and public engagement, reflect a robust approach to law enforcement in the state.
