In July, coal imports fell due to weak demand and the presence of ample stock.

**India’s Coal Imports Decline Amid Monsoon Slowdown**

India’s coal imports experienced a significant drop of 16.4% in July, totaling 21.08 million tonnes, primarily due to sluggish demand during the monsoon season and an ample supply of existing stock. In comparison, the country imported 25.23 million tonnes during the same month last year.

From April to July of the current fiscal year, coal imports also fell to 97.49 million tonnes, down from 100.48 million tonnes in the previous year, as reported by mjunction services, a B2B e-commerce platform formed through a joint venture between Tata Steel and SAIL.

Vinaya Varma, MD & CEO of mjunction, noted, “The decline in volumes is attributed to reduced demand during the monsoon and the high stock levels in the system. We anticipate an increase in demand as we approach the festive season at the end of September.”

In July, non-coking coal imports accounted for 11.54 million tonnes, a decrease from 16.52 million tonnes imported in July of the previous fiscal year. Conversely, coking coal imports rose to 5.85 million tonnes, compared to 4.81 million tonnes during the same month last year.

During the April-July period, non-coking coal imports reached 60.62 million tonnes, down from 65.64 million tonnes in the previous year, while coking coal imports increased to 22.22 million tonnes from 20.26 million tonnes in the same timeframe last year.

Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy previously assured that the country would not face any coal shortages during the monsoon, emphasizing the government’s preparedness to meet demand across various sectors, including power generation. The government remains committed to achieving sustainable growth, enhancing coal availability, and reducing reliance on imports.

As the coal sector continues to play a crucial role in driving India’s economic growth, the outlook remains positive for the upcoming months.
