**Tragic Building Collapse in Maharashtra Claims Lives and Leaves Many Trapped**

At least 15 individuals have lost their lives, including a woman and her one-year-old daughter, following the collapse of an unauthorized four-storey building in Virar, Maharashtra, early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred around 12:05 AM when a rear section of the structure fell onto an adjacent vacant chawl, leading to fears that many others may still be trapped beneath the rubble.

Rescue operations have been ongoing for over 20 hours, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local civic authorities working tirelessly to clear the debris. Initial efforts were hampered by the building’s congested location, requiring manual clearance before heavy machinery could be deployed. District Collector Indu Rani Jakhar confirmed that some individuals might still be trapped under the wreckage.

The collapse has rendered several families homeless, prompting authorities to relocate them to the Chandansar Samajmandir, where they are receiving food, water, and medical assistance. So far, seven victims have been identified, including Arohi Omkar Jovil (24), her daughter Utkarsha (1), Laxman Kisku Singh (26), Dinesh Prakash Sapkal (43), Supriya Nivalkar (38), Arnav Nivalkar (11), and Parvati Sapkal. Some bodies were recovered from the debris, while others succumbed to their injuries in nearby hospitals.

The building, which was deemed illegal by the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC), originally housed 54 flats and four shops, constructed between 2008 and 2009. Residents reported modifications made to the structure in 2012. Although the chawl it collapsed onto was vacant, nearby residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

In response to the tragedy, police have arrested the builder, Nital Gopinath Sane, following a complaint lodged by the VVMC. A case has also been filed against the landowner, citing violations of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act.

VVMC Assistant Commissioner Gilson Gonsalves stated that debris clearance is now progressing rapidly, with operations being conducted on a “war footing.” The focus remains on ensuring the safety of the surrounding area while continuing rescue efforts.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this devastating event, authorities are committed to providing support to those affected and ensuring accountability for the building’s illegal construction.
