**India to Host 89th IEC General Meeting in 2025**
India is set to host the 89th General Meeting (GM) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) from September 15 to 19, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This significant event will gather over 2,000 experts from more than 100 countries to discuss and establish international electrotechnical standards aimed at promoting a sustainable, all-electric, and interconnected world. This marks the fourth occasion India has hosted the prestigious IEC General Meeting, following previous events in 1960, 1997, and 2013.
The Opening Ceremony will be led by Pralhad Joshi, the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Minister of New and Renewable Energy. Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, will inaugurate the IEC GM Exhibition at Bharat Mandapam. This exhibition is anticipated to be the largest of its kind in India’s electrotechnical sector, showcasing innovations in electric mobility, smart lighting, electronics, and IT manufacturing, while also providing a global networking platform for Indian start-ups.
In addition, India will take on the role of Global Secretariat for Standardisation in the field of Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC), a crucial area for developing clean and pollution-free energy solutions. Vimal Mahendru, Vice President of IEC, noted that IEC membership encompasses around 170 countries, representing 99% of the global population and influencing nearly 20% of global trade in value. He emphasized that India’s leadership in LVDC standardisation will bolster global initiatives to create clean technology standards.
Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), highlighted the Bureau’s commitment to integrating quality and standardisation with academia through initiatives like student chapters and a structured six-month internship program, which provides young professionals with exposure to industry practices and the standards development process. The IEC Young Professionals Programme will also see 93 young professionals from around the world participating in workshops, boot camps, and industry visits to cultivate the next generation of technology leaders.
The General Meeting will feature over 150 Technical and Management Committee meetings aimed at shaping next-generation standards. A series of workshops will focus on key emerging areas, including fostering a sustainable world, the impact of artificial intelligence, the future of e-mobility, and building a more inclusive society through standards.
James Wood, Director of Communications at IEC, remarked that global surveys show strong public support for clean and green solutions, describing India as “a real sustainability champion,” making New Delhi an ideal venue for this global dialogue.
