**Different Team, Same Juan Soto**
In his inaugural spring training at-bat with the New York Mets, Juan Soto launched a 426-foot home run to the opposite field off Houston Astros pitcher Colton Gordon, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Saturday. This offseason, Soto signed a groundbreaking 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets, marking the most lucrative deal in professional sports history.
The Mets acquired Soto with hopes of propelling the team to the World Series after their surprising run to the NLCS last season, where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers. His signing raised questions among fans about the future of first baseman Pete Alonso, who was also a free agent this offseason. Alonso ultimately re-signed with the Mets, providing Soto with crucial support in the batting order.
Soto, a four-time All-Star, had a standout season with the Yankees last year, boasting a .288 batting average, a career-high 41 home runs, and 109 RBIs. During the Yankees’ postseason journey to the World Series, he further elevated his performance, hitting .327 with four home runs in 14 games.
Soto began his career with the Washington Nationals in 2018, playing a pivotal role in their 2019 World Series victory over the Houston Astros. He was traded to the San Diego Padres at the 2022 trade deadline and subsequently moved to the Yankees before the 2024 season. Despite being just 26 years old and having played for three different teams, Soto’s impressive resume includes four All-Star appearances, five Silver Slugger awards, and a batting title from the shortened 2020 season.
