Kay Burley has declared that she will be departing from Sky News.

Kay Burley has announced her retirement from Sky News after an impressive 36-year tenure with the broadcaster. During her final appearance on the Sky News Breakfast program, Burley reflected on her journey, stating, “From a standing start to one of the most recognized and valued brands in global news, it has been an honor and privilege to work alongside some of the best and hardest-working teams in the industry.”

She acknowledged the often devastating nature of news, recalling significant events they covered together, such as the tragic death of Princess Diana, the shocking 9/11 terror attacks, the Asian Tsunami, and the Concorde air disaster. However, she also celebrated the joyous moments, including London winning the bid to host the 2012 Olympics, numerous royal weddings, jubilees, and the anticipation surrounding royal births at the Lindo Wing.

After more than a million minutes of live television news—more than any other broadcaster—Burley expressed her desire to pursue other passions, particularly her love for travel. She concluded her announcement by stating, “After covering 12 general elections, including Sir Keir Starmer’s victory last year, I am retiring from Sky News—let politicians of every party rejoice at that news!”

Burley expressed her gratitude to viewers, saying, “Thank you for waking up and tuning in every morning. I can’t tell you how much I have appreciated your support over the last three and a half decades: You’re awesome.” She encouraged her audience to stay connected through her social media.

David Rhodes, executive chairman of Sky News, praised Burley’s unmatched legacy in television journalism and her significant contributions to the network. He noted, “I’m sure some MPs in Westminster will sleep easier knowing they won’t face her indomitable questioning in the mornings.”

Former Sky News editor-at-large Adam Boulton also shared his admiration, stating, “Kay is unique; there are no other women of her background who have had such an impact on British news and current affairs. We have been friends and colleagues for forty years. Onward, Kay—I know exciting times await!
