Lead singer of a rock band faces defamation charges against the Prime Minister of Italy.

**Placebo Frontman Brian Molko Charged with Defamation of Italian PM Giorgia Meloni**

Brian Molko, the lead singer of the alternative rock band Placebo, is facing defamation charges after making derogatory comments about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during a concert. While performing at the Sonic Park festival in Turin in July 2023, Molko criticized Meloni, who heads the far-right Brothers of Italy party, referring to her as a “piece of s***” and labeling her as “fascist” and “racist.” His remarks were met with enthusiastic cheers from the crowd of approximately 5,000 fans.

In August 2023, prosecutors in Turin initiated an investigation into Molko for “contempt of the institutions.” Recent reports indicate that the justice ministry has permitted prosecutors to proceed with legal action against him. If convicted, Molko could face a fine of up to €5,000 (£4,300).

Giorgia Meloni has previously been involved in legal disputes, having won a defamation case against journalist Roberto Saviano in 2023, who referred to her as a “bastard” during a television interview due to her anti-immigration stance. Since assuming power in 2022, Meloni has been a polarizing figure, recently enacting a law that prohibits couples from traveling abroad for surrogacy.
