**West Bengal Increases Durga Puja Grants to Support Festivities**

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a significant increase in the state government’s financial support for Durga Puja committees, raising the grant from Rs 85,000 to Rs 1.10 lakh. This announcement was made during a coordination meeting with Puja organizers in Kolkata, marking the approach of the festive season.

With approximately 45,000 Durga Puja committees registered across the state, this enhanced grant is expected to boost the total estimated expenditure for the celebrations to over Rs 400 crore this year, a notable increase from last year’s Rs 340 crore.

During her address, Banerjee defended the government’s financial backing for Durga Puja, responding to criticism from opposition parties, particularly the BJP. She stated, “Some people claim that Mamata didi doesn’t support Durga Puja and Saraswati Puja. They fail to recognize that these are integral to households across Bengal.” She further emphasized the importance of the festival for many families, stating, “Some even go to court questioning our support for Puja. It’s essential because so many livelihoods depend on it.”

The BJP has consistently opposed the grant, reiterating its criticism following the announcement. Senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha labeled the grant as a misuse of public funds, questioning why the Chief Minister does not fund the celebrations from her party’s resources or personal finances. He accused Banerjee of trying to attract Hindu voters ahead of upcoming elections by financing Durga Puja and planning the construction of a Jagannath temple in Digha.

In addition to the grant increase, Banerjee directed the state administration to improve infrastructure and public services during the Puja period. She instructed that public announcement systems be installed inside and outside pandals, and called for the Transport Department to increase bus frequency. Banerjee also mentioned that she would coordinate with Metro authorities to ensure continuous service and discuss with the Railways to provide more local trains.

Durga Puja immersions are scheduled for October 2, 3, and 4. The Chief Minister assured that police and administrative authorities would maintain law and order throughout the celebrations.
