TD Garden in Boston was the place to be on Thursday night, as a nostalgic moment heightened the excitement of the 4 Nations final crowd. The USA and Canadian hockey teams faced off for the 4 Nations Face-Off championship, just five days after a chaotic first game that featured three fights in the opening nine seconds—their first matchup in a best-on-best format since 2016. Both teams excelled in round-robin play, with Canada securing the tiebreaker over Sweden, leading to this highly anticipated rematch in Boston.
Before the game, two legendary figures in hockey were honored as honorary captains for their respective nations: Wayne Gretzky for Canada and Mike Eruzione for the USA. Eruzione, known for captaining the iconic 1980 Miracle on Ice team, energized the American crowd with his presence. He made a special tribute by donning the jersey of Johnny Gaudreau, the late NHL All-Star who tragically lost his life alongside his younger brother due to an alleged drunk driver in August.
Gaudreau, who played for the United States in the 2013 World Juniors and won a gold medal, also represented the USA in five Ice Hockey World Championships. His legacy was felt throughout this year’s 4 Nations tournament, with a USA jersey featuring his name and No. 13 frequently displayed in the locker room.
Unlike the previous game, there were no fights at the puck drop this time. However, Canada quickly took a 1-0 lead, mirroring the intensity of their earlier encounter.
