The Kansas City Chiefs’ quest for a third consecutive Super Bowl title came to an abrupt end on Sunday as the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense overwhelmed the Chiefs’ offense, resulting in a 40-22 victory. Patrick Mahomes faced significant pressure, being sacked six times and throwing two interceptions, while finishing the game with 257 passing yards. Kansas City entered the matchup as the two-time defending champions and slight favorites.
Following the decisive win, Eagles defensive tackle Milton Williams shared that the prospect of the Chiefs achieving a three-peat served as extra motivation for his team. “Definitely,” Williams stated, referencing the discussions surrounding the Chiefs’ potential trademark of the term. “They were talking about getting the copyright and all that B.S. Throw that s— in the trash.”
Earlier this month, it was confirmed that an agreement had been reached allowing the Chiefs to use the trademarked term “three-peat” if they secured a third straight title, as stated by Miami Heat President Pat Riley’s trademark attorney. However, an NFL spokesperson later clarified that the league was not part of this agreement, which only involved the Chiefs and Riley, and no formal contract had been signed at that time.
Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham, who made his return from injury for the game, noted that the discussions about the Chiefs’ pursuit of three consecutive Vince Lombardi trophies felt like a slight to Philadelphia. “That was motivation because it was kind of a slap to us,” Graham remarked. “It was like, they ain’t seen us yet. So, we heard that all week. And when the game came, execution was on point and together.”
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw two touchdown passes and was named Super Bowl MVP. The Eagles will commemorate their second Super Bowl title with a parade and rally in Philadelphia on Friday.
