Navy launches the ‘Silent Hunter’ Mahe anti-submarine vessel.

The Indian Navy on Monday commissioned INS Mahe, the first vessel of the indigenously designed Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at a ceremony at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. The commissioning was presided over by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and hosted by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command. Senior naval officers, representatives from Cochin Shipyard Limited and other defence partners also attended the event.advertisementNamed after the historic coastal town of Mahe on the Malabar Coast, the ship carries a crest depicting the Urumi — the flexible sword of Kalaripayattu — rising from stylised blue waves. Its mascot, the cheetah, symbolises speed and vigilance, while the motto “Silent Hunters” reflects its stealth and precision-driven role.Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, INS Mahe is the lead ship in a class of eight vessels and has more than 80% indigenous content, involving BEL, L&T Defence, Mahindra Defence Systems, NPOL and over 20 MSMEs. The Navy said the platform underscores India’s growing capabilities in naval design, system integration and self-reliant defence manufacturing.Equipped with advanced sensors, weapons and communication systems, INS Mahe is designed to detect, track and neutralise submarines in coastal and shallow waters. Its compact combat suite allows for prolonged operations in littoral zones and adds significant strength to the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities.Speaking at the ceremony, General Dwivedi said the ship’s induction reflects India’s “growing ability to design, construct and field complex combatants using indigenous technology”. He emphasised that the Mahe-class would boost coastal security, strengthen near-sea dominance and enhance cooperation between the armed forces, noting that future conflicts would be multi-domain.The Mahe-class will serve as the first line of coastal defence and integrate with larger warships, submarines and aviation assets. The Navy said INS Mahe reinforces its posture of remaining “combat ready, cohesive and Aatmanirbhar” as it works to safeguard India’s maritime interests.- Ends in a formal or creative style for better SEO.Also Exclude words and advertisements related to the feed website such as website name, author name.
