Norway is set to acquire a group of frigates manufactured in Britain for its naval forces.

**Norway to Acquire British Anti-Submarine Ships in Major Defense Deal**

Norway has finalized an agreement to purchase a minimum of five new British anti-submarine ships, a deal valued at £10 billion ($13.5 billion). This collaboration aims to enhance the two nations’ efforts to counter Russian maritime activities along NATO’s northern border. Announced on Sunday, the agreement will see Britain supply Norway with Type 26 frigates, forming a combined fleet of eight British and at least five Norwegian vessels that will operate together in Northern Europe.

The Type 26 frigates, manufactured by a consortium led by BAE Systems in the UK, are specifically designed for anti-submarine warfare and high-intensity air defense. This deal is expected to bolster defense capabilities in the North Atlantic, particularly in light of heightened security concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The agreement is anticipated to support approximately 4,000 jobs across 400 companies in Britain.

British Defense Secretary John Healey emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “Our navies will work as one, leading the way in NATO, with this deal putting more world-class warships in the North Atlantic to hunt Russian submarines, protect our critical infrastructure, and keep both our nations secure.”

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre highlighted the urgency of acquiring these frigates, noting that Norway is facing its most serious security situation since World War II. Although Norway considered options from the U.S., Germany, and France, it ultimately chose the UK due to their longstanding historical ties. “Norway and Great Britain are close allies with common interests and very close ties,” Støre remarked.

As NATO members continue to bolster their defense spending in response to potential threats from Moscow, this deal marks a significant step in strengthening military cooperation between Norway and the UK.
