As temperatures soar, Delhi has experienced its highest peak power demand of the summer, reaching 8,231 MW on June 11 at 10:55 PM, according to real-time data from the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC). This year, the capital is projected to surpass a peak demand of 9,000 MW, following last year’s all-time high of 8,656 MW.

The city is currently under a red alert due to a severe heatwave, with temperatures fluctuating between 40.9 and 45 degrees Celsius across various weather stations. The heat index, which accounts for humidity, has alarmingly risen to 51.9 degrees Celsius.

On Wednesday, Ayanagar recorded the highest temperature at 45 degrees Celsius, closely followed by Palam at 44.5 degrees Celsius. Other areas such as Ridge, Pitampura, Lodi Road, Mayur Vihar, and Safdarjung reported temperatures of 43.6, 43.5, 43.4, 40.9, and 43.3 degrees Celsius, respectively.

This unprecedented demand for electricity, coupled with extreme weather conditions, highlights the challenges faced by the city in managing its energy resources during peak summer months.
