**Cloudburst Devastates Chamoli District, Uttarakhand: Rescue Operations Underway**
A severe cloudburst hit Chamoli district in Uttarakhand late Friday night, resulting in significant destruction across the area. The Tharali market, Kotdeep, and the Tharali tehsil complex experienced extensive damage as torrents of debris surged through homes, the residence of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), and various other structures. Numerous vehicles parked at the tehsil complex were buried under the rubble, while the overwhelming flow of water transformed the town’s streets into temporary ponds.
In the nearby Sagwara village, a young girl is feared dead after being trapped beneath the debris, inciting panic among residents. As rescue and relief operations commenced, locals hurried out of their homes to assist. Additionally, several shops in the Chepdaon market suffered damage from falling debris, and one individual has been reported missing, exacerbating the emergency situation.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his concern over the disaster, stating that he is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with officials involved in the rescue efforts. In a post on social media, he remarked, “Late last night, a tragic report of a cloudburst was received in the Tharali area of Chamoli district. The district administration, SDRF, and police have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I am in constant contact with the local administration and am personally monitoring the situation. I pray to God for everyone’s safety.”
The Tharali-Gwaldam road near Minggedera is blocked due to debris and heavy rainfall, while the Tharali-Sagwara route is also closed, disrupting local transportation. Amid the chaos, many vehicles were swept away, with a video emerging from Chamoli showing a distressed man lamenting, “Meri car doob gayi” (My car has sunk), highlighting the extent of the damage and personal losses faced by residents.
District Magistrate Dr. Sandeep Tiwari confirmed that police and administrative teams are actively engaged in rescue and relief operations. A team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been dispatched from Gauchar to assist on-site. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working near Ming Khedere to clear the roads and facilitate traffic and relief efforts.
In light of the disaster, the district administration has ordered all schools and anganwadi centers in the Tharali tehsil to remain closed on Saturday, August 23, 2025.
