As Independence Day 2025 approaches, the Punjab Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) are implementing heightened security protocols across the state to ensure safe and peaceful celebrations. This increase in security comes in response to escalating threats targeting security installations, government infrastructure, and religious sites, particularly temples. Many of these threats are attributed to pro-Khalistani factions, including Babbar Khalsa International and individuals like Khalistani terrorist Lakhbir Singh Sandhu, also known as Landa, and Harvinder Singh Sandhu, a gangster-turned-terrorist based in Pakistan.

According to sources within the security apparatus, the threat level has reached unprecedented heights following Operation Sindoor. A senior official from the security forces remarked, “Each year, the threat perception has only intensified, especially after Operation Sindoor. There is a significant risk to government facilities and temples. While several attempts to disrupt peace have been thwarted, security measures have been intensified since August.”

On August 7, Punjab Police successfully neutralized an improvised explosive device (IED) based on actionable intelligence, underscoring the ongoing security challenges. In a proactive move, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government plans to introduce at least three anti-drone systems in Tarn Taran, with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal set to inaugurate the systems. This initiative aims to combat the smuggling of weapons and drugs via drones along the International Border with Pakistan.

Officials have noted a shift in Pakistan’s tactics, with a decrease in the number of drones being intercepted. Instead, operatives are now utilizing smaller Chinese drones that carry lighter payloads but are deployed more frequently to avoid detection. In collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Punjab government has procured nine anti-drone systems from the Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL). These systems will be strategically deployed across six border districts to monitor and counter narco-terrorism activities in coordination with the BSF.

While the BSF and the Army already employ anti-drone technology in Punjab, the addition of these new units is expected to enhance surveillance capabilities along the extensive border. The systems will be repositioned periodically to maintain operational security and improve detection of drones attempting to cross the border.

In addition to these measures, a special operation lasting two weeks has been initiated to monitor criminal and anti-social elements. Under the guidance of Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, all Commissioners of Police (CPs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) have been directed to bolster security protocols, increase patrols, and intensify night operations in their jurisdictions.

In summary, as Punjab prepares for Independence Day 2025, the state is taking significant steps to ensure the safety and security of its citizens against rising threats, particularly from pro-Khalistani groups.
