**India Approves ₹62,000 Crore Project for 97 LCA Mark 1A Fighter Jets**

In a significant advancement for the Make in India initiative, the Indian government has approved a ₹62,000 crore project to procure 97 additional LCA Mark 1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force (IAF). This final approval was granted during a high-level meeting on Tuesday, allowing Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to commence production, as confirmed by defense sources.

This new order is expected to facilitate the IAF’s transition from its aging MiG-21 fleet, which is scheduled for retirement in the coming weeks. The indigenous fighter aircraft program, fully supported by the Defence Ministry and Air Headquarters, is poised to enhance indigenization efforts and provide substantial business opportunities for small and medium enterprises involved in the defense sector across India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a strong advocate for HAL’s revitalization. Under his administration, the state-owned aerospace company has received numerous contracts to manufacture indigenous fighter jets, helicopters, and engines. Notably, PM Modi made history by taking a sortie in the trainer variant of the indigenous fighter jet, marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has piloted a combat aircraft.

The plan to acquire 97 additional LCA Mark 1As was initially disclosed by former Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari during a visit to Spain, where he shared the IAF’s ambitious plans to increase orders for indigenous fighter jets. The Mark 1A variant boasts upgraded avionics and radar systems compared to the previous batch of 40 LCAs, with over 65% indigenous content in these new aircraft.

This program symbolizes India’s commitment to the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. Furthermore, HAL is anticipated to secure future orders for over 200 LCA Mark 2 jets and a similar number of fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft.
