In light of shifting global sentiments following Donald Trump’s return as U.S. president, ABB Ltd, a leading Swedish-Swiss engineering firm, observes that companies worldwide are recalibrating their targets for transitioning to cleaner energy technologies. As the largest electrical equipment manufacturer in India by market capitalization, ABB recognizes that the timelines for this transition are being pushed back due to the realization that previous goals were overly ambitious.

Brandon Spencer, president of ABB’s motion business and a member of the group executive committee, stated, “I think we were kind of as a global society, a little unrealistic in how fast that transition is going to happen.” He emphasized that unlike past transitions driven by cost, the current shift towards cleaner energy is motivated by environmental considerations. “We see timelines pushed to the right now. I think it has come back to more realism than maybe over optimism,” he added.

This adjustment in expectations coincides with cuts in climate spending in the U.S., the world’s largest economy. A recent spending bill passed by Congress eliminated tax credits for low carbon emission sources and reduced incentives for electric vehicles, following the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement.

Spencer is not alone in his assessment; Jérôme Sevin, a partner at consulting firm Kearney, noted that Trump’s focus on oil and gas production could delay progress on energy transition initiatives. While the U.S. and Europe aim for carbon neutrality by 2050, India has set its target for 2070.

Despite these changes in the global market, ABB remains optimistic about its business prospects. Spencer explained, “For the motion business in ABB, we supply to every single one of those industries. So, for us and with the diversity that we have, it doesn’t matter which one of those is a winner or not, because every single one of them needs motors, drives, generators in order to power that industry forward.”

ABB’s motion business specializes in manufacturing industrial motors that power machinery in various sectors. With four manufacturing units in India, its major clients include Tata Steel Ltd, Witt India, ArcelorMittal, and JSW Steel. In 2024, ABB’s motion business reported a revenue of ₹4,287 crore in India, an increase from ₹3,785 crore the previous year.

In conclusion, as the global landscape evolves, ABB is committed to providing sustainable solutions that not only meet industry needs but also contribute positively to the environment.
