Tiger Woods announced on Monday that he will not be participating in the Genesis Invitational as he is still “processing” the loss of his mother. Last week, Woods shared the news of his mother, Kultida, passing away at the age of 78.
“I had intended to play this week, but I’m just not ready,” Woods stated. “I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my mom would have wanted, but I’m still coming to terms with her loss. I appreciate everyone who has reached out, and I hope to be at Torrey later in the week. Thank you for the continued support during this difficult time.”
Woods played golf with former President Donald Trump on Sunday before Trump traveled to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX. Following the announcement of Kultida’s death, Trump expressed his condolences, stating, “I was just informed that Tiger Woods’ wonderful mother, Kultida, has passed away — she has gone on to greener fairways! Kultida Woods was an incredible influence on Tiger, providing him with much of his strength and brilliance. Melania and I send our love and prayers to Tiger and his remarkable family.”
Woods’ foundation organizes the Genesis Invitational, which does not have a cut line. If he had participated, it would have marked his first tournament since undergoing a microdiscectomy in September to relieve leg pain.
This year’s event will take place at Torrey Pines instead of Riviera due to the wildfires that affected the Los Angeles area in January.
