President Donald Trump made history on Sunday as the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl, overshadowing Taylor Swift in the process. Following the game, he took the opportunity to mock her. When Trump appeared on the screen during the national anthem, he received a loud cheer from the Superdome crowd, while Swift was met with significant boos when shown on the jumbotron. Swift also had to witness her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, endure a disappointing 40-22 defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles, the team she has long supported. In a post on Truth Social after the game, Trump ridiculed both Swift and the Chiefs, attributing the boos to his “Make America Great Again” supporters. He wrote, “The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!”
During the game, Trump shared videos highlighting the contrasting reactions he received compared to Swift. Over the past year, Trump and Swift have been at odds, particularly after she endorsed Kamala Harris for president on September 10. The following morning, Trump expressed his preference for Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, over Swift on “Fox & Friends.” Brittany Mahomes has shown support for Trump through social media. Shortly after Swift’s endorsement of Harris, Trump posted on Truth Social, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”
Swift has become a polarizing figure among NFL fans since her relationship with Kelce became public in September 2023. She began attending most Chiefs games, leading to frequent camera pans to her during broadcasts. While Swift has been credited with attracting a new wave of fans to the Chiefs and the NFL, particularly among women, many longtime fans have expressed frustration over her constant presence at games. Last year, she attended the Super Bowl and celebrated the Chiefs’ victory. This year, her appearances continued, much to the dismay of fans who grew tired of the media focus on her.
Despite some tension, Swift and Brittany Mahomes maintained a public friendship, including a group dinner with Kelce and Patrick Mahomes just days before the Super Bowl. While Trump praised the Mahomes family and even predicted a Chiefs victory, he had no qualms about mocking them in his Truth Social post on Sunday night. Additionally, Trump criticized the NFL’s new kickoff format.
