In a troubling development, the Lucknow Police have initiated investigations into two separate cases of alleged sexual exploitation, forced abortions, and threats to life after complaints were lodged by two women at different police stations in Uttar Pradesh’s capital.

In the first incident, a 21-year-old woman from Faizullaganj reported that Mahendra Verma, a resident of Lakhimpur Kheri, befriended her on Instagram and subsequently exploited her sexually under the guise of a romantic relationship. The woman claimed that between January and June 2025, Verma assaulted her multiple times and coerced her into undergoing a medical abortion when she became pregnant. When she insisted on marriage, the accused allegedly threatened to kill her and her mother. Following directives from the court, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Verma.

The second case involves a 30-year-old woman from Gudamba who accused Ritik Gulati of Rajajipuram and his family of sexually exploiting her over a three-year period, during which she was forced to undergo two abortions. The woman stated that she had been engaged to Gulati in January, with plans for marriage in November. However, in August, she claimed that his family withdrew from the wedding and issued threats against her. The police have filed charges against Gulati and his family members, including his father, mother, and uncle.

Joint Commissioner of Police Amita Verma confirmed that the statements of both women will be recorded before a magistrate as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have emphasized that these cases are being treated with the utmost seriousness, and legal action will be pursued based on the findings.

As these investigations unfold, the community remains vigilant, highlighting the importance of addressing issues of sexual exploitation and ensuring justice for victims.
