**Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia Apologizes for Heisman Comments**

Vanderbilt University’s athletic director issued a statement on Monday addressing quarterback Diego Pavia’s controversial remarks on social media following the Heisman Trophy results over the weekend. Pavia, who finished a distant second to Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, expressed his frustration with voters in a now-viral Instagram post.

In her statement to The Tennessean, athletic director Candice Lee emphasized that Pavia recognizes the inappropriateness of his comments and has since apologized. “Diego knows his actions were unacceptable and he has apologized,” Lee stated. “I know he is contrite and regrets the hurt he caused. He is a passionate and authentic competitor, and while his authenticity has been nurtured and celebrated here, it does not change the responsibility that comes with representing Vanderbilt University. We believe in growth and accountability, and we will continue to support Diego as he learns from this moment.”

Pavia later took to X to express his regret, stating, “I didn’t handle those emotions well at all and did not represent myself the way I wanted to. I have much love and respect for the Heisman voters and the selection process, and I apologize for being disrespectful. It was a mistake, and I am sorry.” He also acknowledged Mendoza’s achievements, saying, “Fernando Mendoza is an elite competitor and a deserving winner of the award.”

Despite finishing second with 189 first-place votes compared to Mendoza’s 643, Pavia reflected on his journey, noting the challenges he has faced and the support he has received from his family, teammates, and coaches. He expressed excitement about competing in the upcoming ReliaQuest Bowl.

In his second season at Vanderbilt, Pavia led the SEC with a 71.2% completion rate, throwing for 3,192 yards and 27 touchdowns, along with nine rushing scores. His reaction to the Heisman voting results aligns with his confident demeanor, as he had previously urged voters to consider him for the prestigious award.
