**CPI Legislator Vazhoor Soman Passes Away at 72**

Vazhoor Soman, a prominent legislator from the Communist Party of India (CPI) representing Kerala’s Peerumedu constituency, has sadly passed away at the age of 72. Soman collapsed on Thursday after attending a revenue assembly meeting at the Institute of Land and Disaster Management (ILDM) in PTP Nagar, Thiruvananthapuram. Despite being rushed to Sree Ramakrishna Mission Hospital in Sasthamangalam, he was pronounced dead upon arrival, with doctors confirming the cause as a heart attack.

The remains of the esteemed CPI leader will be available for public homage at MN Smarakam from 7 PM to 8:30 PM before being transported to Peerumade for final rites.

Elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Peerumedu in the 2021 elections, Soman secured his position by defeating Congress candidate Syriac Thomas by a margin of 1,835 votes. His dedication to public service began in 1974, focusing on the welfare of plantation workers in the Idukki district. He held significant roles, including state vice-president of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and general secretary of the Peerumade Plantation Workers’ Union, recognized as Asia’s largest organization for plantation workers. Additionally, he chaired the standing committee of the Idukki district panchayat.

Originally from Vazhoor in Kottayam district, Soman established his political base in Peerumade after a visit to his mother’s ancestral home during his student years. He became involved with the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) and dedicated his efforts to the plantation sector, even learning Tamil to better connect with the local community. His commitment to education led him to the former Soviet Union, where he furthered his studies.

Although he was considered for candidacy in Peerumedu multiple times, Soman graciously stepped aside for fellow party member ES Biji Mol. He also served as chairman of the Warehousing Corporation during the first Pinarayi Vijayan government.

Soman is survived by his two children, Shobith and Saubith, both of whom are practicing advocates. His legacy in the political and social landscape of Kerala will be remembered by many.
