Visitors are prohibited from entering the Sundarbans during the monsoon season to protect the wildlife during their breeding period.

**Sundarbans Closed to Tourists for Monsoon Conservation Efforts**

The Sundarbans, West Bengal’s premier tourist destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will be closed to visitors during the entire monsoon season from June 15 to September 15, 2025. This annual initiative, announced by the Forest Department, aims to safeguard the region’s diverse wildlife during their critical breeding cycle.

The closure coincides with the peak mating and nesting period for numerous species, including the iconic Royal Bengal Tiger, estuarine crocodiles, and over 290 bird species. By restricting tourist access, the Sundarbans will provide a tranquil environment that enhances reproductive success among its inhabitants.

This seasonal ban is part of the Integrated Resources Management Plan (IRMP), which focuses on sustainable and long-term conservation strategies for the Sundarbans. According to West Bengal Forest Minister Birbaha Hansda, “It’s a rule for all core forests in West Bengal and India during this time of the year. We always maintain this rule to provide a disturbance-free environment and boost reproductive success for animals and birds.”

In addition to its terrestrial wildlife, the Sundarbans is also home to 219 aquatic species and boasts a rich diversity of flora, with 344 different plant species thriving in this unique ecosystem. This marks the third consecutive year of the monsoon-season ban, with the notable change of starting a month earlier than in previous years to better align with the natural rhythms of the forest’s wildlife.

The Sundarbans’ closure during the monsoon season is crucial for maintaining the delicate ecological balance of this biodiverse region. As conservation efforts continue, the hope is that these measures will lead to a healthier environment for both wildlife and the ecosystem as a whole.
