In a thrilling matchup on Tuesday night, Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani found himself at the center of a rare triple play against the Los Angeles Angels. The game was tied at five runs in the top of the sixth inning when Ohtani hit a line drive up the middle off Angels pitcher Brock Burke.

Angels shortstop Zach Neto made a spectacular play, catching the ball in mid-air before stepping on second base to tag out a baserunner who had strayed too far. He then threw to first baseman Nolan Schanuel, who tagged Dalton Rushing to complete the triple play. Neto recorded two putouts and an assist during this impressive defensive feat.

“I caught the ball, stepped on second, and as I was looking to first, I saw the guy kind of still puzzled at first, so I threw the ball over there hoping Nolan could make a play, and he did,” Neto explained. “I actually told Nolan that if he messed that one up — because that was the first triple play ever in my life — if he messed that up, we were going to have some words.”

This marked the eighth triple play in the Angels’ history and only the second since 1997, with the last one occurring in August 2023 against the Tampa Bay Rays. Neto admitted that he had only witnessed triple plays through social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok.

Later in the game, Ohtani sought to make amends for his earlier misfortune by hitting a go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth, putting the Dodgers ahead 6-5. However, the Angels rallied in the bottom of the ninth, with Schanuel’s sacrifice fly tying the game, followed by Jo Addell’s high-chopper in the tenth inning that secured a 7-6 victory for the Angels.

With this win, the Angels improved their season record to 58-62, while the Dodgers fell to 68-52, now tied for first place in the National League West.
