The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) believes that India has the potential to take advantage of the opportunity created by China’s exit from Japan’s textile market.

**India Poised to Capitalize on Japan’s Apparel Market Amid China’s Decline**

India is strategically positioned to take advantage of the declining share of China, the leading exporter of ready-made garments (RMG) to Japan, according to the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC). The council is spearheading a high-level delegation to Tokyo to explore avenues for enhancing exports and attracting investments by engaging with prominent Japanese brands and retail chains. This delegation will participate in the India Tex Trend Fair, scheduled to take place in Tokyo from July 15-17, where over 150 Indian apparel exporters will showcase a wide array of domestic apparel products.

AEPC Chairman Sudhir Sekhri emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that the council aims to deepen trade relations and investment opportunities with top Japanese brands and retail chains. He noted that increased engagement with the Japanese market has led to a more effective utilization of the free trade agreement between India and Japan. “India can seamlessly fill the gap left by China’s declining market share in RMG exports to Japan,” Sekhri remarked.

In 2024, India’s garment exports to Japan reached USD 234.5 million, while Japan imported RMG worth approximately USD 23 billion last year, with India holding a mere one percent share. Sekhri highlighted that Japanese sourcing companies prioritize cost, quality, and agility, and Indian suppliers are well-equipped to meet these demands, capable of handling both small, customized orders of 200 pieces and large-scale orders of up to 300,000 pieces of a single style.

The fair in Tokyo will be inaugurated by Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, marking a significant step in strengthening India’s presence in the Japanese apparel market.
