Centene’s stock price fell following the unexpected announcement of losses by the insurer.

**Centene Corp. Reports Unexpected Quarterly Loss, Shares Plummet**

Centene Corp., a prominent health insurer, announced an unexpected quarterly loss on Friday, marking another setback for the company, which recently withdrew its 2025 financial guidance due to challenges in its Affordable Care Act (ACA) segment. Following the announcement, shares fell by 12.7% in pre-market trading in New York, contributing to a staggering 56% decline since the beginning of the year.

In a departure from its usual practice of providing guidance during earnings releases, Centene indicated that it would offer updated projections during a conference call with analysts scheduled for 8 a.m. New York time. Morningstar analyst Julie Utterback noted that the absence of guidance in the earnings release could suggest that the 2025 outlook may be weaker than analysts had anticipated. She added that Centene executives might need to reassure investors as they navigate the remainder of 2025 and beyond.

The health insurer attributed its second-quarter loss to a miscalculation in its ACA business, the same issue that led to the withdrawal of its earlier outlook. Centene explained that it would receive less compensation for taking on sicker patients than previously expected. For the second quarter, the company reported an adjusted loss of 16 cents per share, while Wall Street analysts had forecasted a profit of 55 cents per share.

“We are disappointed by our second-quarter results, but we have a clear understanding of the trends that have impacted our performance and are working with urgency and focus to restore our earnings trajectory,” stated Sarah London, CEO of Centene, in the earnings statement.

During the second quarter, Centene allocated 93% of its premium revenues to medical costs, exceeding the average analyst expectation of 91.6%. Investors typically prefer a lower health benefits ratio. The increase in this ratio was primarily attributed to the ACA revenue issue, alongside rising medical costs in ACA plans and Medicaid, particularly in behavioral health, home health, and high-cost medications.

The company also noted that various government programs likely reducing healthcare coverage may have prompted patients to seek more medical care while they still can, thereby increasing medical spending.
