The government reports that E20 fuel improves acceleration and reduces carbon emissions by 30%.

**E20 Ethanol-Blended Petrol: A Step Towards Cleaner Fuel and Enhanced Performance**

The Indian government has recently defended the rollout of 20% ethanol-blended petrol (E20) amid rising criticism. Officials assert that this transition will significantly reduce pollution, lower the oil import bill, and provide better vehicle performance, including improved acceleration and ride quality. Additionally, E20 is expected to cut carbon emissions by approximately 30% compared to the previously used E10 fuel.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has acknowledged concerns from some motorists regarding reduced mileage and potential engine damage for vehicles not calibrated for higher ethanol content. However, the ministry emphasized that these issues were anticipated and thoroughly examined by the government and an Inter-Ministerial Committee of NITI Aayog back in 2020. It clarified that mileage can be influenced by various factors beyond fuel type, such as driving habits, vehicle maintenance, tire pressure, alignment, and air conditioning load. The ministry noted that any efficiency drop in E10 vehicles has been minimal.

Ethanol’s higher octane rating of 108.5, compared to petrol’s 84.4, makes E20 particularly advantageous for modern high-compression engines. This higher octane level contributes to stronger acceleration, which is especially beneficial for urban driving conditions. Furthermore, ethanol’s elevated heat of vaporization helps lower intake manifold temperatures, enhancing air-fuel mixture density and improving volumetric efficiency.

According to a study by NITI Aayog, greenhouse gas emissions from sugarcane-based ethanol are 65% lower, while those from maize-based ethanol are 50% lower than emissions from conventional petrol. Since the Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2014-15 through July 2025, blending by public-sector oil marketing companies has resulted in savings of over ₹1.44 lakh crore in foreign exchange, the replacement of approximately 245 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil, and a reduction of around 736 lakh metric tonnes of CO2 emissions—equivalent to planting 30 crore trees.

With the implementation of 20% blending, farmers are projected to receive ₹40,000 crore in payments this year, while foreign exchange savings could reach ₹43,000 crore. The government highlighted the positive impact of ethanol blending on rural economies, noting that it has contributed to increased farmer incomes and has played a role in reducing suicides in distressed agricultural regions like Vidarbha.

In response to concerns about wear and tear, the government stated that E20 is compatible with most vehicles. Only some older models may require early replacement of rubber components or gaskets, a low-cost procedure typically performed during routine maintenance and likely needed only once in a vehicle’s lifetime.

On the topic of pricing, the ministry pointed out that the current weighted average price of ethanol is higher than that of refined petrol. Nevertheless, oil companies continue to support the blending mandate due to its long-term benefits for energy security, rural incomes, and environmental sustainability. The ministry assured that insurance claims will remain unaffected by the use of E20.

Addressing worries about the rapid increase in ethanol content, the government confirmed that the current roadmap for E20 usage is set until October 31, 2026. Any future adjustments will depend on the findings of the Inter-Ministerial Committee and stakeholder consultations.

**FAQ**

**Q: What are the benefits of using E20 ethanol-blended petrol?**
