**Headline:** Kerala Teacher Under Investigation for Urging Muslim Students to Skip Onam Celebrations

In a controversial incident from Sirajul Uloom English High School in Kadavallur, Thrissur, Kerala, police have initiated legal proceedings against a school teacher for allegedly encouraging Muslim students to refrain from participating in Onam celebrations. The teacher, identified as Khadija, reportedly sent a voice note to parents, urging them to prevent their children from engaging in the festivities, which she described as a celebration of “other religions.”

In the audio message, Khadija emphasized the importance of adhering to Islamic principles, stating, “Onam celebrations are polytheistic and should not be encouraged. Neither we nor our children should encourage Onam celebrations in any way. Joining in with the customs of people of other religions may turn into ‘shirk’.” She further asserted that children should be raised within an Islamic cultural framework and kept away from the rituals of other faiths, stressing the need to teach them the seriousness of participating in such celebrations.

The situation escalated when a complaint was lodged by a member of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), prompting the Kunnamkulam police to file a case against Khadija under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which addresses provocation with the intent to incite a riot.

In response to the uproar, the management of Sirajul Uloom English High School announced the suspension of two teachers who had circulated separate audio messages regarding the issue. The school clarified that the views expressed were personal opinions and did not reflect the institution’s stance. The management reiterated its commitment to celebrating Onam in a grand manner this year, having already communicated plans for the festivities to class and PTA groups.

While two teachers were involved in sending audio messages, the police have only registered a case against one. Onam, recognized as the official festival of Kerala, is celebrated widely across the state by individuals of all faiths, highlighting the cultural diversity and communal harmony that characterizes the region.
