As speculation intensifies regarding the New York Jets’ potential decision to part ways with Aaron Rodgers this offseason, his media engagements may play a significant role in that choice. Rodgers joined the Jets prior to the 2023 season after an 18-year tenure with the Green Bay Packers. His departure from Green Bay was marked by several controversies, including his claim of being “immunized” against COVID-19 and his positive remarks about the hallucinogen ayahuasca. Shortly after what turned out to be his final game with the Packers, he participated in a “darkness retreat.”
During this period, Rodgers became a regular guest on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” where he often stirred controversy. His appearances have included criticisms of Dr. Anthony Fauci regarding vaccine policies, linking Jimmy Kimmel to Jeffrey Epstein, and ridiculing “celebrities bought by China” in the context of the upcoming 2024 presidential election. A recent report from The Athletic suggests that the new Jets management informed Rodgers that he would not be permitted to continue his appearances on the show if he remains with the team in 2025.
Dianna Russini shared on her “Scoop City” podcast that during discussions about his future, the Jets made it clear: “If you’re going to be part of this team, you’re going to attend all of training camp, you’re not going to do Pat McAfee interviews anymore.” The Jets recently appointed Aaron Glenn as head coach and Darren Mougey as general manager, with Glenn reportedly emphasizing that Rodgers would need to comply with his terms, which included full participation in offseason activities.
Rodgers previously missed mandatory minicamp due to a scheduled trip to Egypt, which led then-coach Robert Saleh to state, “If it’s important to Aaron, it’s important to us.” However, given the Jets’ disappointing 5-12 record during a season that carried playoff expectations, it seems that Rodgers’ time with the team may be nearing its end. Despite moments of brilliance, he often appeared as a quarterback struggling to regain form after a serious Achilles injury.
With the Jets experiencing a decline in performance in 2024, even after acquiring Davante Adams, it may be time for the organization to consider moving on from Rodgers.
