Assam introduces automated SMS alerts to curb school student absenteeism.

**Assam Government Launches SMS Alert System to Combat Student Absenteeism**

The Assam government’s Department of School Education has introduced an innovative automated SMS alert system aimed at reducing student absenteeism in government schools. This initiative, launched on Monday, utilizes a newly developed app designed to monitor attendance and other related issues within the state’s educational institutions.

According to an official statement, the system will send alerts to parents and class teachers when a student is absent for five consecutive days. The department has been actively tracking daily attendance through the Shiksha Setu Application and has identified various reasons for student absences, including family issues and a lack of awareness among parents.

To tackle this challenge and enhance student attendance, the department has implemented the state-of-the-art Automated SMS-Based Absenteeism Alert System. This technology-driven approach is a significant step toward improving educational continuity and facilitating timely interventions to reduce dropout rates across all schools.

The alert system will automatically generate standardized SMS notifications for students who remain absent for five consecutive days. These messages will be sent at regular five-day intervals (on the 5th, 10th, and 15th days of absence) and will continue until the student returns to school, ensuring ongoing communication with families and educational institutions.

Alerts will be tailored and dispatched simultaneously to two primary stakeholders: class teachers and parents or guardians. Class teachers will receive specific alerts that include the student’s name, class, and section, enabling them to reach out to parents to encourage their child’s return to school. Meanwhile, parents will receive direct reminders regarding their child’s ongoing absence.

Acknowledging the linguistic diversity of the state, the SMS alerts will be available in five official languages: Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Hindi, and English. In each district, messages will be sent in at least two local languages, tailored to the geographical and demographic context, to ensure maximum reach and understanding.

This initiative represents a proactive approach by the Assam government to address student absenteeism and promote a more engaged educational environment.
