The Cincinnati Bengals are anticipated to apply the franchise tag to Tee Higgins for the second consecutive year, as reported by SI.com. This decision does not stem from a lack of desire to extend his contract; rather, the Bengals plan to pursue a long-term deal with Higgins after tagging him.
Cincinnati is expected to use the non-exclusive franchise tag, which would allow them to receive two first-round draft picks if Higgins signs with another team. Although Higgins was projected to be one of the top free agents this offseason, the Bengals are clearly indicating their intention to keep him as a key part of their offense.
Last offseason was marked by tension when Higgins received the franchise tag. He expressed a desire for a long-term contract to remain with the team but ultimately played under the tag. The Bengals and Higgins have a negotiation window from February 18 to March 4 to discuss a potential contract before the official tagging occurs.
Higgins’ teammates have openly supported him, hoping for a resolution between the front office and the veteran receiver. Quarterback Joe Burrow emphasized the importance of retaining talented players, stating, “You don’t want to make a habit of letting great players get out of the building. Tee is a great player and a guy that does everything the right way. He works really hard for it.”
Ja’Marr Chase, Higgins’ fellow receiver, echoed similar sentiments. The 26-year-old Higgins concluded the season with 73 receptions from Burrow, who led the NFL in passing yards in 2024, totaling 911 yards and 10 touchdowns. Over his five seasons with Cincinnati, Higgins has amassed 4,595 receiving yards and 34 touchdowns on 330 catches.
If Higgins plays under the franchise tag in 2025, he would be guaranteed $26.18 million for the year, based on the average of the top five receiver salaries from the previous season.
