Tesla Inc. appears to be making significant strides in India, as the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer has listed 13 job openings in the country shortly after CEO Elon Musk’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a Bloomberg report. The positions are primarily located in Mumbai and Delhi.

The company has advertised five roles for service technicians and advisory positions in Mumbai and Delhi. Additionally, there are eight openings for customer engagement managers and delivery operations specialists, all based in Mumbai.

Elon Musk and Prime Minister Modi met on February 13 during Modi’s first official visit to the United States following the election of President Donald Trump. Musk has become a prominent figure in the Trump administration, actively participating in key decisions through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). After their discussion, Modi shared on social media platform X that they covered various topics, including Musk’s interests in space, mobility, technology, and innovation, while also highlighting India’s commitment to reform and the principle of “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance.”
**Background on Tesla’s Engagement with India**
Tesla’s relationship with India has been inconsistent over the years, largely due to concerns regarding high import duties. Recently, India reduced the basic customs duty on luxury vehicles priced over $40,000 from 110% to 70%. In May 2024, Musk had to cancel a planned visit to India, citing “heavy obligations,” but expressed intentions to visit in the future.
While India’s EV market is still developing compared to China’s, it presents an opportunity for Tesla to address declining sales, as the company experienced its first annual drop in EV sales in over a decade. Last year, India’s electric car sales approached 100,000 units, in stark contrast to China’s 11 million.
