Musk’s ‘Doge’ claim about USAid funds for India sets off political firestorm

Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” has sparked controversy in India after it alleged that the U.S. government was funneling millions to support Indian elections. A post on Musk’s social media platform X last week featured claims from Doge, a group established by Donald Trump, stating that a $21 million grant from USAID intended to boost “voter turnout in India” had been canceled due to the president’s extensive cuts to foreign aid. However, investigations by the Indian Express revealed that no such funds were ever allocated to India, and USAID officials have denied the existence of such a program.

Instead, documents indicate that USAID had earmarked $21 million for a non-profit organization focused on political engagement in neighboring Bangladesh, amidst a severe crackdown on political opposition there. Despite the lack of evidence, Trump seized on the claim to undermine USAID and its global development initiatives, asserting that the agency was being misused. Musk also claimed that Doge was “feeding USAID into the wood chipper.”

At a Miami event, Trump questioned the need for $21 million for voter turnout in India, suggesting it was an attempt to influence elections. He reiterated this accusation at another event, claiming the funds were intended for Prime Minister Modi and labeling it a “kickback scheme.” Trump’s assertions had significant repercussions in India, where Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has long accused international civil society and human rights organizations of undermining its authority, leading to the shutdown of several prominent organizations in the country.

BJP leaders and ministers interpreted Trump’s comments as evidence of foreign interference in Indian elections. Amit Malviya, head of the BJP IT cell, stated that Trump confirmed attempts to influence the Indian election against Modi. India’s Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, expressed shock at the alleged manipulation of the democratic process, while Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of Modi’s economic advisory council, echoed similar sentiments.
