Stephen A. Smith is set to remain a key figure at ESPN, securing a lucrative five-year contract extension valued at over $100 million, as reported by The Athletic. The veteran reporter and analyst will continue to host “First Take,” which will remain his primary role within the network.
According to the report, Smith will reduce his appearances on other shows, allowing him to focus more on his podcast, where he explores a variety of topics, including political discussions. While he has been a familiar face on NBA programming, The Athletic indicates that this will change moving forward.
At 57 years old, Smith has also hinted at a potential political career. During a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” he expressed initial reluctance about pursuing a political position but made comments that suggested he might be considering a presidential run.
Smith has been critical of former President Joe Biden while expressing support for former Vice President Kamala Harris during the election cycle. He has also been vocal in his criticism of President Donald Trump and the Democratic Party’s messaging.
This new contract represents a significant increase in Smith’s salary, rising from $12 million to approximately $20 million annually. Smith has a background in journalism, having previously written for the New York Daily News and The Philadelphia Inquirer, and has hosted local radio shows in both New York and Los Angeles for ESPN.
