As the NHL playoff races intensify, a new frontrunner for the “Save of the Year” has emerged. On Wednesday night, the Anaheim Ducks faced off against the Vancouver Canucks, and although the Ducks suffered a tough defeat, fans witnessed an incredible glove save earlier in the game.
In the first period, Brock Boeser made an attempt to score from close range after receiving a pass from a teammate. Goaltender John Gibson managed to get a significant piece of the puck. However, the puck remained airborne and seemed destined for the back of the net. In a remarkable display of skill, Gibson executed a behind-the-back glove save reminiscent of “Pistol Pete.” Although the puck slipped out of his glove, the referees halted play, ensuring the puck remained in front of the net rather than crossing the goal line.
Unfortunately for Gibson, his night took a turn for the worse when he left the game due to a lower body injury. Canucks winger Drew O’Connor collided with him in the crease, causing both players to tumble awkwardly into the net. Gibson remained on the ice for several minutes before slowly getting up and exiting with assistance. O’Connor received a penalty for goaltender interference, and Lukas Dostal stepped in as relief for Gibson.
Before leaving, Gibson had successfully stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced, while Dostal made 14 saves. The Ducks found themselves trailing 3-1 early in the third period and were unable to find the equalizer.
Coming off a strong 6-2 victory against the reigning Western Conference champions, the Ducks saw their playoff aspirations take a hit with this loss. Meanwhile, the Canucks, also vying for a playoff spot, secured a crucial win.
