National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Noorul Hassan recently survived a violent ambush by a group of approximately 100 drug smugglers, which he described as a meticulously orchestrated attempt on his life. The incident occurred on April 5 as Hassan was leaving a family dinner at his sister’s house.

In a statement to reporters at his residence, Hassan detailed the harrowing experience, stating, “It was an attempt on my life. A drug mafia gang of around 100 people attacked me in a well-planned manner. They even fired gunshots.” The MLA, representing Kshetrigao, revealed that the assailants, allegedly led by a man named Mohammad Ajmal, had gathered near Kshetrigao High School prior to the attack.

During the assault, Hassan recounted how the gang rushed towards him, grabbed his hand, and attempted to choke him. “I somehow pulled myself away. My security team rushed me to a safer spot, but the gang began throwing stones and opened fire. One of them even pointed a gun at my forehead,” he claimed. In response, his security personnel reportedly discharged a few blank rounds to help control the situation and facilitate his escape.

Hassan also noted that the streetlights in the area were intentionally turned off during the attack, further emphasizing the premeditated nature of the assault. He expressed concern that many of the attackers, including Ajmal, were out on bail for serious crimes, particularly under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The Porompat Police Station has initiated an investigation into the incident, and Hassan has submitted a formal complaint; however, no arrests have been made as of yet. Earlier that day, Hassan had contacted an officer from Imphal East District to verify ongoing construction work at Kshetrigao High School, located just a short distance from where he was attacked.

This alarming incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by politicians in regions affected by drug-related violence and raises questions about the safety and security of public figures in such environments.
